“A Song That Won’t Stop Singing” A Poem for a Daughter Gone Too Soon

“A Song That Won’t Stop Singing”

An original poem by Axton N.O. Mitchell

Your daughter was a melody

written in a key the world couldn’t hold, for very long.

sweet and sharp,

full of rhythm even in the quiet.

She gave you three echoes of her laughter.

Three reasons to rise again,

each with her eyes or stubborn spark.

Holding something within them that keeps her here, fresh in your mind.

Each one still asking for lullabies

when the night grows too long.

She fought a war inside her brain,

a storm she didn’t ask to weather,

but still, she danced.

Still, she sang.

Still, she loved.

Though the silence came too soon,

there is no end to the music

she left in your hearts.

You are her first home,

and now, you are her last prayer.

She’s not gone,

not really.

She’s just humming now

from a place your ears can’t reach,

but your heart still hears.
