  • A Shift in the Craft: From Harry Potter to My Own Kind of Justice

A Shift in the Craft: From Harry Potter to My Own Kind of Justice

Recently, I received two questions through the feedback section on my site. They are simple at first glance, but powerful after I sat with them:

How have your views on magic changed over time?

    And

What’s a mistake you made as a beginner in witchcraft?

I don’t take questions like this lightly. Magic isn’t just something I practice, it’s something I live. These answers are honest, personal, and maybe a little messy. That’s the only way I know how to write truth. So here goes:

I used to think magic lived in storybooks. In robes and wands and chosen ones.

Like so many kids, I fell in love with Harry Potter young. The world, the friendships, the promise that if you were different enough, maybe magic would find you. And it did, in a way. I still love the stories. I still rewatch the films and re-read the books, but always secondhand, always gifted or thrifted. I can separate the art from the author. Such a bitter woman doesn’t own my nostalgia. She doesn’t own the comfort those stories gave me when I had no map for who I was.

But my magic? It isn’t from her pages.

I come from deep Christian roots. We went on a haunt once as teens. It was one of those local ghost-hunting nights where you sneak around the back roads hoping for chills. After that, my mom had bedroom radio blessed by a priest because it wouldn’t stop turning itself on. Full volume. Music blaring from speakers that weren’t even hooked up. Power cords unplugged. It’d still play. I thought it was kind of cool. She thought it was a demon. I guess we both believed in something.

    Friends

Years later, it wasn’t a book or a priest that pulled me deeper, it was friends. Witchy ones. Queer ones. Friends who handed me crystals without laughing, who let me stand in their circles and fumble the words. I started reading. Studying. I found Wicca. Then, I watched it fall away as I followed the older trails back to pagan roots. There were Appalachian whispers, bloodlines, and broken bones. And yes, herbs my grandmother used without ever calling it witchcraft. I built something of my own. My own form of justice. My own kind of holy.

But if there’s one thing I wish I’d learned sooner?

    Stop talking too damn much.

    Or lightly put:

    Don’t tell people everything.

That’s the beginner mistake I made: I opened up too much, too soon. I was so eager to be understood. I wanted to be known in this new light. I didn’t realize what I was giving away. In witchcraft, anything can be used against you. Anything.

Don’t tell them your full name and date of birth. Don’t tell them the name you practice under and, never make that name something easy to guess. Never tell them your protections. Your wards. Your sealing methods. Your undoings.

They don’t need to know how you anchor your energy.

They don’t need to know which gods, spirits, or ancestors you speak to.

They don’t need to know how to unravel you.

Even the spells I share aren’t the ones I use for myself. Because what works for me has locks built into it. Layers. Hidden keys I’ll never give away. These are just beginning stepping stones that work as is or that you can build into your own.

    Your magic is yours.

Keep some of it close. Keep some of it sacred.

Let them think they know the path you walk, but never show them the map.

Have a question for me? Drop it below, through the feedback page, or send it by email to poeaxtry@gmail.com. I love hearing from you.

Run Forrest. Run! It’s Hot Outside!

What is your favorite season of year? Why?

Running through streams and over hills with Luna right beside me. She’s all energy and fur. It’s just pure, happy dog chaos. We wander from trail to trail. We chase lightning bugs as they flicker in the dusk. We laugh and pass blunts with friends. We jump off rocks and cliffs into the cool, refreshing water below, feeling the rush of summer all around us. Nights are for camping, sitting close to crackling fires, swapping stories under a sky full of stars. And yes lots of rock hounding, because you never know what treasures the earth might have waiting.

This journal is for all those wild, messy, beautiful moments that make summer feel like magic.

Indian Falls is so hard to photograph in Dublin Ohio

    Yesterday was quiet.

    Still.

I had just finished reformatting my very first e-book,

the one that started everything. I didn’t change much, just softened it visually, made it feel more like me again. A small act, but somehow it felt like reclaiming the beginning. I also cave it a whole new book cover.

A different angle of Dublin's Indian Falls

With a little light left in the day, I grabbed Luna’s leash. That’s all she needed, no words, just instinct. She was at my heel in seconds.

We climbed into the Honda, just the two of us, and headed out.

Roughly thirty-five minutes to Dublin. It’s one of those drives that doesn’t feel long if your heart is quiet enough.

Stop One Indian Falls- Dublin, Ohio

    We hit Indian Falls first.

It’s not huge, but I’ve been wanting to check it out, so it felt like a good place to start.

We did the little loop around. Luna sniffing everything like it was her first time outside in her life. Of course, I had to let her get in the water for a second. Which meant, obviously, photos were required. Wet dog, sunshine, that kind of magic. Her joy’s contagious.

Stop Two: Hayden Falls Dublin, Ohio

After that, we drove maybe four minutes down the road to Hayden Falls.

This spot didn’t have any of those “no swimming” signs, so people were actually in the water this time. Wading in. Laughing. It looked inviting. Like, deeply inviting.

Had I dressed for it, I probably would’ve been in there too.

    Next time, I will.

Just a Stoner | Poetry on Solace, Silence & Green Healing

An original poem by Axton N.O. Mitchell

    “Just a Stoner”

Smoke trails trace the edges of my silence.

Finding solace somewhere away from all the violence.

The world shoves it in my face.

When I light up this green,

I feel I may be healing.

    Finally,

I can start to see a place for me,

    with no misery.

    Marijuana’s but a drug,

    Or so they say.

I’ve never seen a narcotic be so freeing.

Just keep this between me and me.

    Lost in the silence,

Ignited by the flick of a Bic.

brick wall background, yellow lighter, and smoke, with a quote from the poem just a stoner
  • What Makes Spell Work Work; Clear Intention, Personal Chants, and Charging Magic Without Tools

What Makes Spell Work Work; Clear Intention, Personal Chants, and Charging Magic Without Tools

    What Makes a Spell Work?

A spell works because you work it. It’s not the candles, the herbs, or the moon that bend reality. It’s your mind, your focus, and the clarity of your desire. When you strip away the shiny trappings, what remains is pure intention fueled by emotional weight. Your spell is a pulse of will sent into the universe; if your intention is fuzzy, the spell is too.

I’ve seen spells fail because people hide what they really want or wrap it in vague “good vibes.” That’s the opposite of working magic. A spell demands brutal honesty with yourself: what exactly do you need, and why do you need it? Without that clarity, your energy scatters.

    How to Set Intention Clearly

Forget vague phrases. Intentions have to cut like a blade through the noise in your mind. Here’s how I do it:

Pinpoint the root feeling: Is it fear, anger, grief, longing? Don’t dance around it. Define the exact change. Avoid vague terms like “happiness” or “success.” Be specific, such as stating, “I want to stand in my voice without shaking.” Or say, “I want to stop feeling dread when I look in the mirror.” Own your boundaries: Spell work isn’t a free-for-all. What won’t you accept or give away in this process? That sharp line grounds your intention.

    Example:

“I release the habit of shrinking myself, so others feel comfortable. I claim space with my whole body and voice.”

It’s direct, emotional, and personal. That’s what makes it real.

Writing a Basic Chant Personal, Raw, and Resonant

A chant is your spell in sound. It should feel like your own voice speaking your truth no borrowed lines, no generic affirmations. Here’s what I do:

Use simple, clear language that feels natural to you. Don’t force rhyme or flow if it’s not there. Repeat a phrase that hits an emotional nerve for you. Keep it short and raw just enough to summon the feeling you want to carry.

Example chant I wrote for reclaiming strength:

“I am here. I am loud. I am not afraid.”

    Another, for healing after trauma:

“Pain was real, pain is passed. I am whole again.”

These aren’t polished or pretty; they’re honest and charged because they’re mine.

Charging a Spell Without Tools & How to Use Passive Magic

You don’t need crystals, candles, or herbs to charge a spell. Your presence and focus are the tools.

Passive magic means charging your spell by being holding your intention steady through everyday moments:

Walking in the woods, feeling your feet on the earth. Breathing deeply and letting the intention root in your body. Carrying your chant silently in your mind throughout the day.

No elaborate ritual required. The magic works when your mind and body believe it.

In contrast, active magic is deliberate action: chanting aloud, lighting candles, or making gestures. Both work, but passive magic is powerful for those times you can’t or won’t perform a ritual.

    Final Thoughts

Spell work is not about perfection or presentation. It’s about showing up raw and honest to yourself. Name your truth. Send that truth out into the world with confidence. When your intention is sharp, your chant becomes your voice. Your energy is real. Without tools, your magic still moves.

  • The Trail After the Rain: Mud, Mist, and Memory in Ohio’s Green

The Trail After the Rain: Mud, Mist, and Memory in Ohio’s Green

    The Trail- Wet & Green

Everything was green. Not just leaf-green, sopping, dripping, glowing green. The kind that fogs your glasses and soaks your socks straight through your boots.

The air held its breath, thick with steam. It was like the earth hadn’t quite exhaled yet. The moss seemed to visibly grow as the rain fell on. Mist clung to tree trunks and hovered over the path like it was hiding something special beneath.

    The Wet Dog

Luna’s white toes turned the color of coffee grounds in minutes. The thick slathers of mud clinging to her paws like the trail didn’t want her to leave. She didn’t mind. She never does. Just trotted ahead like she was born to be messy and bossy.

    The Wet Man

My glasses were useless, fogged, streaked, dripping. I gave up and pushed them to the top of my head. My hair was plastered to my skull. It was heavy and soaked. It felt like it wanted to grow roots right there in the air.

Clothes clung like skin. Everything I wore needed wrung out. My shirt, shorts, even my damn socks. Still, I kept walking.

The Mud, The Ferns, & The Quicksand?

The mud didn’t just squish, it slurped. It claimed every step like it wanted to keep whomever dare step there. Every footfall was a question: You sure you want to keep going?

Yeah. I was sure. Though I thought for certain, all my childhood fears of sinking-sand were about to come to ahead.

Puddles mirrored the sky but blurred it, like even the clouds were dizzy from the downpour.

Ferns unfurled like they’d been waiting on the storm. You could smell the worms and the wet wood. The mushies finally pulling up after a dry spell. The whole forest was sweating. So was I. But the trail felt like a baptism. A cleansing. A mud-soaked reentry.

  • I Brought My Full Moon Ritual to Work

I Brought My Full Moon Ritual to Work

There’s something deeply bittersweet about missing the moon.

Every time the full moon rises, I feel a tug at my chest. It is something ancient and soft. It calls me to pause. But most of the time I’m not lighting candles or laying out cloth under its glow. I’m under fluorescent lights instead clocked in doing the work that keeps me afloat.

So this time I brought the ritual with me.

Right now, I am sitting under the moon. I am charging my stones. I am not waiting until tomorrow. I am doing it now. This moment is already sacred because I am present. I will renew my intentions and affirmations again tomorrow night. I will continue to recharge these stones monthly under every full moon.

    Lunch Break Spell Work

On my break, I held stones in my hands. I spoke like someone who already knows their magic is working. I whispered truths I’m ready to live in, not just hope for. I didn’t ask the moon for anything. I affirmed what is already happening. It is already becoming, already mine.

I set intentions for stability and creative expansion for momentum that doesn’t burn me out. I set intentions for clarity, protection, grounded joy, and long-lasting purpose. I set them not from a place of lacking but from a place of embodiment. I chose each phrase carefully. I viewed them not like a wish list but like an oath.

Because when we set intentions we’re not begging the universe we’re building it

We’re saying this is what I am becoming this is what already lives inside me this is what is inevitable because I choose to keep showing up

    Two Stones

Two stones carried the heart of this moment for me Libyan Desert Glass and Moldavite.

Libyan Desert Glass, born of heat and impact, is the kind of stone that doesn’t whisper. It tells you that you are building something real. It’s not a stone of fast thrills. It’s about legacy. It’s about a long-term vision and foundations you can return to. That’s why I carry it. It reminds me that the slow, steady burn of my current work is establishing a foundation. This foundation is something my future self can stand on.

Moldavite that one needs its own moment.

Moldavite has been sensationalized by TikTok. It’s portrayed as a chaos crystal, a drama bomb, and a remedy for all bad things. There’s a belief that it also makes your exes vanish. But that’s not what it is, not really.

Moldavite doesn’t repel it calls. It protects. It is beautiful and powerful. It commands respect.

    Amplifies

It amplifies what you set. If you pair it with panic, it will magnify panic. If matched with unresolved grief or bitter wishes, it magnifies those as well. Just take it all away, and you’ll see what it magnifies. That storm. That purge. That mess. It’s not because it’s evil, but because you told it to.

Moldavite is a stone of momentum. It says I’ll bring it faster, louder, and now. If you unintentionally focus on chaos, fear, or destruction, it will return that energy. It will echo back in ways that you’re not ready for.

    So I use it carefully.

With Moldavite, I speak only what I want. I accelerate aligned growth and creative expansion. I gain spiritual clarity and purpose that doesn’t break me.

Seriously be careful with Her like Cardi B

    And it answers. Always.

If you’ve ever missed a full moon because life got in the way know this it still sees you.

And you can still make the moment sacred

Even if it’s in your work uniform Even if it’s between tasks Even if it’s just a whisper

    It counts

    You count

And the moon is still so so proud.

If you can’t perform your full moon ritual outdoors or at work, you can charge your stones differently. Set them on a windowsill during the full moon’s glow. The moonlight will reach them there. It will carry the energy you intend. Just focus on your intentions before you leave.

And if you miss the full moon altogether, a Selenite charging jar can gently cleanse and recharge your stones anytime. If you want to learn how to make one or buy a beautiful handcrafted jar, just ask . I can connect you with a friend who makes them.

  • If Humans Had Taglines, This Would Be Mine

If Humans Had Taglines, This Would Be Mine

If humans had taglines, what would yours be?

Mine would have to be one of these:

You can take the nature out the boy, but you can’t take the man out of nature

Even when I’m knee-deep in ink and altar smoke, my roots are still hiking trails, crinoid fossils, and the hum of wind through stone.

Poetry is resistance when you write like Poeaxtry

Every line is protest, prayer, and proof that I’m still here trans, loud, witchy, and unerasable.

My gender is wilderness: untamed, honest, and thriving in the dark

I wasn’t made to be trimmed down into a label. I’m a forest fire and a bloom, both.

Spell bags in one hand, survival in the other

I’m a living altar: grief and grit, ritual and rage, healing and hustle.

    Former silence, current storm

I used to swallow it all. Now I speak, write, scream, and conjure without shame.

Born from shadow work, built to shine

The ghosts that haunt me taught me how to live.

    Soft things with teeth

Gentleness doesn’t mean weakness. I know how to bite back if I have to.

Can write you a love poem, hex your ex, and hike a mountain before lunch

    I’m not a contradiction, I’m a constellation.

But honestly, I can’t be wrapped up in just one line. I’m too many things. Too full of lives survived, of magic made, of poems burned and rewritten.

So if I had to choose?

Unapologetic trans man. Poet witch. Rock hunter. Truth-teller. Born to be wild… not just free. And always me!

  • What Do You See? A Stack of Books or a Lifetime of Stories?

What Do You See? A Stack of Books or a Lifetime of Stories?

Inspired by what do you see?

    What do you see?

A stack of old books worn, discolored, pages slightly curled from age or damp air. Some stained with coffee rings or candle wax. Varying sizes. Varying weight.

Maybe that’s all, if you don’t look long.

    But

    Look harder.

Pause. Breathe. Squint if you must. Wipe the crust from your eyes and clear off those glasses…!

You might see the corners of a child’s favorite bedtime story, read until the spine cracked and the cover faded to ghost. You might see a grimoire with notes in the margin, a smudge of ash from a spell done wrong or perfectly right. A tearstain that dried before it soaked through. Wax from a blue candle. A pressed herb.

One book may have been a gift that was inscribed in loopy cursive, handed to a friend on a bad day, then carried from one broken heart to the next like a torch. A companion. A relic. A secret.

I bet one is a family recipe book. Passed from great grandma to the youngest grand daughter. The pages hold her keys to her culture and history.

A college text? A how to do it yourself? Oh I know the yellow pages phone book!

Really though these aren’t just books. They’re not junk or clutter or meaningless shelf-fillers.

    They’re memory. Muscle. Magic.

Every spine has a soul behind it.

    So I ask again

    What do you see?

    Really.

  • “Top Surgery Poem” Healing, Strength, and Transformation

“Top Surgery Poem” Healing, Strength, and Transformation

An original poem by: Axton N.O. Mitchell

    “Top surgery”

I used to carry the weight

like a secret in my chest.

A burden I had to shoulder,

    all on my own.

    Through three layers

    of nylon pressing

    down on ribs and chest.

Making my skin and fatty tissue

    flatter or appearing masculine.

    Replacing Ace wraps winding

tighter as I take each breath,

broken ribs left to tuck me in.

    This is my new skin.

    Though,

    sometimes I forget.

I already built it from within.

    Years ago, stone by stone

There’s no need to shout anymore,

poking there will still leave me

    sore.
