  • The Longest Day, The Quietest Moment

The Longest Day, The Quietest Moment

    Solstice

There’s something ironic about the Solstice being the brightest, longest day of the year. All that sunlight and somehow, my most important truths came in the quiet. Not in the light. Not in celebration. Not even in ritual. Just in the soft, calm knowing that came after decades of waiting.

I used to wait on the porch every other weekend, little backpack packed. Notebooks and a toothbrush. Maybe a toy I’d bring with me to his place. Except he never came. Or well to be honest he usually didn’t come. He came sometimes. It was as if he’d appear once in a blue moon. He seemed to come when he thought my hope would shrivel and I would stop waiting if he didn’t.

    That was the pattern.

    Calls full of promises.

    Nothing to follow through.

    Excuses. Delays. Silence.

Years of silence. With minimal visits a year even if he scheduled them all.

Still Child Me Waited & Waited

But I still waited, every other weekend like clockwork. It became part of my rhythm, part of the structure that shaped me. I didn’t realize until recently that I’d started seeing everyone through that same lens. I treated every new connection like it was just another promise waiting to be broken. Another porch. Another weekend. Another packed bag that never got carried to the car.

    But Lately

It’s only lately, maybe in this strange stillness, that I’ve realized not everyone is him. Not every missed message is abandonment. Not every “I’m here for you” is a lie.

Some people stay. Some people show up. Some people are not him.

And I’ve stood by my no contact boundary. For 2 years now mostly. That was not easy. There’s guilt in that kind of distance. But there’s also peace. And maybe peace is the true Solstice gift. It’s the kind that comes from holding your own sunlight instead of chasing scraps of someone else’s.

Two years ago, he commented on something I’d posted about my mom. He acted like he was still a presence. It seemed like he had any place in my life or my grief. This man doesn’t even know my birthday. My address. Where I live. Who I am. He knows a version of me that’s long dead. The child on the porch. Not the person I am now.

Should Have Just Stayed No Contact

    So I messaged him.

The message was long, so long you had to click to expand it in iMessages. I told him the truth. I laid it out. The damage. The broken trust. The years of absence. How his words mean nothing anymore because he never once followed through. I wasn’t cruel, just honest. Direct. Clear.

He replied with a single period.

    Just a dot.

Like all that truth didn’t even deserve words.

A year later, I tried again. Softer this time. Not because I thought it would change anything, but because I needed to release it from me. I needed to say that this wasn’t my job to fix. That I was the child. That I had done enough.

    Another long message. Another scroll.

He replied with a thumbs up.

    That was it.

And somehow, those two hollow responses made everything quieter. Like, finally quiet. Not the kind of quiet you sit in while waiting . The kind that comes when you stop waiting. When you stop leaving the porch light on. When you let the bag go unpacked. When you choose to stop hoping for something you know won’t ever come.

    That was my Solstice.

Not a ritual. Not a hike. Not a spell.

    Just a quiet knowing:

    He is who he is.

And I am no longer the child waiting for him to change.

I may share those messages someday. This is not to expose him. It is to show what emotional closure looks like when it’s one-sided. What it means to hold truth when no one ever mirrors it back. What it means to free yourself from the trap of obligation and choose healing instead.

    The sun is highest now.

And I’ve never felt more clear.

  • I Gave the Sun My Grief

I Gave the Sun My Grief

This Sabbat, I didn’t write spells in ink or carve runes in wax.

I just gave the sun my grief.

    Grief; I don’t need it

I gave it the weight of every father wound I still carry. The kind of pain that isn’t loud anymore, just permanent. The kind that warps your nervous system, your breath, your sense of what people mean when they say they care.

I offered the fire the fear of abandonment that was planted in me before I could spell the word.

My father placed that fear in my lap like it was mine to own.

    Like I asked for it.

Like it wasn’t his to carry.

He gave me years of waiting, promises with no shape, affection that only lived in voicemail. And silence. So much silence. He made me doubt my own worth in the name of “trying.”

    He made me wait.

Then made me think it was my fault for expecting him to show.

I’ve carried that shit for decades. And I’m tired.

This year, Litha wasn’t about joy or warmth or some golden glow.

    It was about fire.

And what I could let it take.

    Bye Jake.. I mean Dad

    So I whispered it:

    Take the grief.

    Take the rage.

Take the pieces of him still embedded in my self-doubt.

Take the echoes of that porch I waited on.

Take the hollowed-out child he left behind every other weekend.

I gave the sun everything I didn’t owe him.

The grief was both closure and combustion.

I didn’t write it out as a ritual, it was a ritual. Every breath I let go of, every memory I finally stopped justifying. Every “but he tried” that I no longer believe.

    Let the fire keep it.

This is the year I stopped seeing my pain as something beautiful and started seeing it as something worth burning.

    It’s not a symbol. It’s not a lesson. It’s not poetry.

    It’s just mine.

And I don’t want it anymore.

Maybe that’s what real witchcraft is:

    Not just manifesting joy.

But letting the fire consume what never belonged to you in the first place.

  • Cascades Falls & Old Mill Trail Trekking 2 Trails in the Rain

Cascades Falls & Old Mill Trail Trekking 2 Trails in the Rain

    Best For:

Ohio Waterfall Loop Hiking, View Seekers, Nature Journal Readers, Waterway Enthusiasts.

I Know Not to “Make Precise Plans”

You could still beat us. Maybe. If you’re fast. Or waterproof.Yet, We still experienced Cascades Falls & Old Mill Trail.

    Trail 1- Elyria Ohio:

Yet, I made a whole plan this morning. Mapped everything out. A full-ass waterfall route, organized and optimistic. And then we didn’t follow a single part of it after the first stop. Typical.

Luna the red-nosed American Pitbill & Axton on the wooden boardwalk at Cascade Falls in Elyria, Ohio
Cascades falls Elyria Ohio Totally had a hard rain the day before & later that day

We started at Cascades in Elyria. Real cute, real scenic, real fucking hot. It was already pushing 85 by the time we got there, and the air wasn’t moving at all. Nothing but still heat baking into the rocks and the back of our necks. We were out there trying to appreciate nature while actively evaporating. So we did the reasonable thing. Looked at the rest of the route, looked at each other, and said fuck it. Loop-de-loop detour time.

    Trail 2 the Reroute:

We rerouted ourselves straight to Old Mill Trail after Cascades Falls. I almost called it Old Man Trail out loud, and honestly, I stand by that. It fits. By the time we pulled up, it was about to start raining. It got just steady enough to soak you, just warm enough out that we didn’t care anymore. We were already overheating, so it felt more like a reset than an inconvenience. So we hiked anyway. Me hiding my phone under ,y hat and not my hat hiding my head.

Huge rocks with trees growing on top on the trail to Cascade Falls
Part of the creek leading up to Cascade Falls, sun beam in the center, and creek almost out of its bank

We did both sides of the trail loop. Just about three miles total, maybe a little under, all while completely drenched. The trail was soft and wet but passable, and the creek was running clear. Luna got in the water a couple different times to cool off and honestly I thought about following her. At that point, nothing mattered but staying moving and not slipping on moss.

The mushrooms were out like they knew it was their time. Bright reds, ghostly whites, slick oranges, clusters and frills and weird little glowing ones tucked into the moss. Some looked poisonous. Some looked like they were made out of coral. All of them looked like they had something to say. We stopped repeatedly. We crouched down to take a picture. Sometimes, we pointed out one that looked like it could bite back.

Two orange mushrooms grow out of a downed log
Two cap mushroooms cream colored growing out od a downed log

It wasn’t the hike we planned, but it’s the one we got. And even soaking wet, even completely off route, it was still a good one. We’ll call it a sweat-to-soak-to-smile kind of day. That’s how summer trail chaos works sometimes. You don’t always beat the heat, but you can at least out-walk it. For a little while, anyway.

Tree and sky view when I made it back to the car. Drinched

  • What I’ve Outgrown: Shadow Work Reflections on Friendship and Healing

What I’ve Outgrown: Shadow Work Reflections on Friendship and Healing

I was His best friend He was NOT Mine!

I’ve outgrown my adult best friend. The boy I became a man with. The boy who made it feel like I wasn’t alone in a place where nobody felt like me. For years he was the only mirror I had. The only person who got it. Honestly, I’ve been outgrowing him slowly, painfully, one splinter at a time. I didn’t know how to let go. Not until the rope cut so deep I practically sliced my fingers off just trying to hold on. Now there’s no grip left. Just skin and scar. space and peace. I don’t hate him. Which is usually how I let go when my love turns to hate. I just no longer wish to participate in his delusions or fantasies.

    Addiction

I’ve also outgrown habitual drug use. Or really, drugs in general. At least the illicit kind. I still like my plants: weed, nicotine, caffeine. Those feel more natural to me. Oh, and mushrooms. Can’t forget the little mushroom dudes. Sometimes they’ve taught me more than any therapist ever did. But the rest of it? That chasing? That hole-filling impulse? That’s gone.

    Toxicity

I’ve outgrown toxic patterns. The ones I clung to because they felt like home, mostly outgrown. I mean chaos was the language I was taught love in. I grew up watching relationships rot from the inside out and thought that must be what connection looks like. So I repeated it. Over and over. Until I didn’t. I still have my self-sabotaging hiccups but no one is perfect.

    Clothes

I’ve outgrown my clothes. Literally. I dropped over 60 pounds this year. I had told myself I’d do it as my resolution. For once, I didn’t break that promise. My body feels different now. My skin holds me differently. My knees don’t hurt on hikes as quick for sure.

    Allowing Myself to Wallow

And maybe the biggest thing? I’ve outgrown the lie that my depression controls everything. Some days, yeah, it wins. But other days, a lot of days, it’s a choice. Not to be sick, but to sit in it. To fester in the filth instead of fighting. I’ve started calling myself out on it. Started crawling out of bed even when I don’t want to. Started facing the rot before it spreads. Because healing is choosing again and again not to let the dark devour you whole. If there’s no light in my line of sight I have learned to become the light.

  • Dreaming of Australia: A Poet’s Wild Retreat to Beaches, Outback & the Reef

Dreaming of Australia: A Poet’s Wild Retreat to Beaches, Outback & the Reef

What countries do you want to visit?

    Australia. That’s the one.

Every time someone asks where I’d run off to, if time and money weren’t a leash, it’s Australia. Loud and clear like a wave crash.

I want it all, the weird, the wild, the wonder.

I want summer heat that slaps you in the face and melts you down into something softer.

I want to wake up in a tent, located far from city lights. My wish is to have red dust in my hair and a notebook full of sand-crusted stanzas.

A little poets’ retreat for one. It’s just me and my words. The landscape doesn’t give a damn if I get it right.

I want to see the Great Barrier Reef before it’s gone. I want to float above a riot of color, coral, and life. Another wish I hold is to remind others that the world still holds magic.

I want to meet a dingo. Not a zoo version, but the real kind. Somewhere out in the open. That is coming from the guy who wanted to go scorpion hunting. With black lights and everything, in Vegas…
Until he had his first AZ bark scorpion encounter.

I want kangaroos in the distance. They look like strange statues with soft eyes. I also want the low hum of unfamiliar birds. This sound stitches silence into something sacred. I know a kangaroo will kick my head in until Christmas 2030, so we are totally keeping distance.

I want the ocean, whether it is blue and angry or calm and endless. Axton does not care. I just want to stand in front of it. I want to remember that I’m small in the best way. It reminds me that I belong to something bigger.

I want sharks too. In the distance, like the kangaroos. I love danger with a heartbeat. I want to admire their beauty safely. We all know sea puppies need hugs too.

I want to cook shrimp on the barbie just to say I did. I want to get sun-kissed and freckled. Let’s drink something cold while the air buzzes with heat and possibility.

I want to go where the sky flips. Southern constellations will be above me. Everything I thought I knew will be upside down. I will be better for it.

And yeah, I’d write poems there,

I can see it now. I sit cross-legged on scorched earth.
    I call it holy,

Screaming a line into the wind and hearing it echo,

    That’d be lit

    That’d be everything

    For pause.

And I’d probably stay there until my They/Them Goddess called me home.

Unless of course somehow I got them to
    stay upside down with me.

  • What the Sun Can’t Burn

    What the Sun Can’t Burn

I’ve burned a lot to survive. Versions of me that loved too loud. Versions that begged to be chosen.

Grief I thought I’d buried, only to set it alight again when the season called for it.

Litha makes it easy to focus on what we’re releasing, but what about what we refuse to give up?

    What I have left

This is a list of what the fire hasn’t taken. My ability to write through pain without erasing it. My voice, even when it shook, even when it wanted to vanish.

My hunger for truth. My softness, even when it was mocked or manipulated. My magic, especially the kind that hides in daily rituals, not sabbat circles. My will to live, even when I hated the world for making me prove it.

Some parts of me have already been through the fire and walked out different scarred, sure, but still whole.

Some things are too sacred to be burned.

There’s a kind of strength in knowing what can’t be stripped from you even by trauma, even by grief, even by your own self-destruction cycles.

So as I cast into the fire what no longer fits.

I hold close what has always been mine.

I kiss the parts that endured.

I water the roots that stayed intact.

Let this sun shine on what I’ve kept.

    What I’ve rebuilt.

What I will never again set on fire.

Letter to the Sun, A Summer Gratitude and Request for Growth

    Dear Sun,

    Light

Thank you for the light you pour over me. Oh and everything else that needs to grow. Whether it is the food we eat or the magic some call upon. You lift life from the soil and charge the air with energy. I can feel it while you warm me to my core. I do not take for granted the way you coax the herbs from the earth. Nor, the way your warmth settles on my skin while hiking lost in the quiet wildness.

    Time

Thank you for the long days we spend together. When I wander trails as I breathe in the sunlit air and feel myself expand. You give me the freedom to be wild and alive in a way only you can. But I also thank you for the days when you step back. You let the rain move in. The clouds soften the light. The earth drinks deep. I know growth needs balance.

    Strength

This season, I ask for your continued strength to fuel my journey. Help me carry your fire when the days get heavy. Help me remember that even in the heat, there is rest. Let your light inspire my spells, my words, and my heart. Keep me connected to the land and to myself as I move through the longest days.

  • My Favorite Thing About Myself: Writing with Empathy, Offering a Voice

My Favorite Thing About Myself: Writing with Empathy, Offering a Voice

What’s your favorite thing about yourself?

My favorite thing about myself is the way I write. Not just the act of writing. The way I can tap into emotions that aren’t mine and still treat them with care. As if I’ve lived them in another life. It’s not performance. It’s empathy. Real, rooted empathy, born from listening and learning, not guessing or stealing.

I don’t write from other perspectives because I want to show off range. I do it because I believe everyone deserves to be held. To be seen. And sometimes, they can’t say the words themselves, at least not yet. Not out loud or, not safely. So I write what I hear when I listen. I write what I feel when someone trusts me with their story. I write in a way that doesn’t claim their pain, but honors it. Echoes it. Reflects it back gently.

I love that about myself. I love that I don’t just have the skill to write. But also the heart to write ethically, thoughtfully and, with purpose. I am not here to play at pain. I’m here to translate it. To give shape to the things that ache in silence. I do it through poetry. Poetry allows me the ability to be exact and yet leave room for mystery. It lets me say the same truth in a thousand ways until many individuals feel it and understand it. Shit, maybe they’ll even empathize more with others.

My poetry has always been more than art. Survival. Scream, prayer, and apology. It has been the safest place I know. I can’t often work my mouth. So, when my mouth won’t open, I find poetry. It’s how I say the things I never felt allowed to say. The map of everything I’ve clawed through, and the love letter to the people still climbing out of similar things.

I know I can write something and someone else will read it and say, “That’s it. That’s how it feels.” That matters. This is what keeps me going. The idea of being published, not the praise, but the connection. The invisible thread that stretches from my chest to someone else. It’s why I make books. It’s why I write collections. So future people like me, and you if you’re different to know we lived, laughed, and fought like hell.

I do not write from others experiences as a person I am not. I simply write from my point of view as their friend, family member, co-worker, fellow human etc. Poetry like this comes in reminders to check on others or stand up for causes. It also involves protesting and addressing other subjects that bring hard topics to the front and center.

My favorite thing about myself is that I can do that. That I can create something honest and resonant. This is not just for me, but for the ones who don’t have the words yet. For the ones who never saw themselves in poems until now. For the ones who are still learning how to say, “I exist. I hurt. I matter.”

Rock House Trail Hocking Hills Morning Hike After Night Shift

    Best For:

Solo Hikers, Geological Exploration, Cave Lovers, Ohio Nature Enthusiasts, and Nature Journal Readers.

Saturday Morning | Hocking Hills, OH

Looking down before you descend the stairs to Rock house & Natural Bridge

I clocked out at 6 a.m. sharp, already planning to hit Rock House Trail, today. Another twelve-hour overnight at the nursing home. That kind of quiet that isn’t restful, just constant. Oxygen machines humming low, the soft shuffle of slippers down the hall, someone crying quietly two doors down. You carry it home in your bones.

    But this morning was different.

I had Saturday night off. That’s rare for me but, I’d gotten my shift covered to go to the No Kings protest. Before that, though, I needed to move. Shake off the weight.

So I drove 35 minutes home, changed, got Luna ready, and hit the road again. For an hour and eleven minute drive to Hocking Hills. I played Stevie Nicks and music from that era the whole way. I tapped my fingers to the beat on the steering wheel. I left the windows down and let the wind and exhaustion fill the silence.

    The Trail

Warning sign at rock house to not leave trails beacuse of dangerous cliffs.

We hit the Rock House Trail around 8 a.m. The trail is only 0.8 miles one way, but the drop is steep. Narrow paths. Stone stairs. Roots like ropes knotted across the dirt. Luna walked ahead, tail high, tuned in. I let her lead. I wasn’t in a hurry to return to anything.

The start of the trail at Rock house is so misleading ft trees and a level path

    Then the cave appeared.

    Rock House.

A cavern carved into sandstone long, tall, ancient. 200 feet across, 25 feet high, with arched window-like openings that let light in sideways, soft and slow. Inside, everything goes still. You don’t just walk into the cave, you arrive. You become part of its silence.

    PIGEONS!

    Except for the pigeons.

A few families live there now. You can hear them cooing, echoing from inside the cave and outside the walls, like voices trapped in stone. It was surreal. Luna didn’t bark. She didn’t pull. She just stood and listened. So did I. You have to.

There are ovens carved into the walls, like something out of another life. Maybe people baked bread there. Maybe they hid. Maybe they prayed. This place has always belonged to those who needed it. For a few minutes, that included me.

One massive Rock Wall at Rock house Hocking Hills, ohio

We took the rim trail up and out. It was steeper, louder, full of light—but I welcomed it. Something in me was lighter too.

Timber a down tree next tot the path

One last stop before home: donuts.

There’s a new place beside the Hocking Hills Diner everyone’s been hyping for their maple bacon donuts. Of course, they were already sold out.

The lady who owns the donut place told me to call ahead next time. She’d put some back just for me because I live an hour and eleven minutes away.

So I got a s’mores donut and a Buckeyes donut instead. I sat in the car with my boots still muddy. Luna curled beside me. I ate them like they were the thing I came for all along.

    And maybe they were.

    What actually happened next:

I missed the No Kings protest. My Lexapro and Wellbutrin look the same, and I ended up taking two Wellbutrin and no Lexapro by mistake. I stayed in bed all Saturday and Sunday. I called off work and slept until Monday. Then I went back to my shift.

Sometimes plans shift without warning. Sometimes the body demands its own kind of protest.

I hope you all are enjoying our many trips.
